5 Most Common Mental Games that Yuck Januarys Yum!
Hiya !
The holiday break is supposed to relax us, but I find every New Year, the same mental games resurface — comparison, overwhelm, endless lists of unrealistic goals or resolutions, and self-doubt.
At the best, these patterns are just a drag making the start of January and setting our resolutions annoying. At their worst, these patterns can sneak in and block us from the real, lasting change we’re seeking - and keep us on a yearly cycle of well-intentionally setting, then giving up on our goals.
So here are 4 mental games to cut right now if you want to transition into January with ease and create long-lasting transformation in 2025:
1️⃣ Cut: Overwhelm — from information overload and comparing yourself to what others are doing or following “shoulds” that don’t align with you.
Instead: Reflect on what truly matters to you. What do you desire most for 2025? Create a plan that feels authentic and aligned with your vision, not anyone else’s.
2️⃣ Cut: Trying to do it all at once — overloading January with an endless to-do list and unrealistic expectations, which leads to burnout before you even begin.
Instead: Start small and build habits naturally from where you are right now. Progress doesn’t have to be perfect; it just needs to move you forward in a sustainable way.
3️⃣ Cut: Results-only goals — focusing solely on outcomes like “lose 10 pounds” or “get promoted” can make the process feel like a chore or a burden.
Instead: Set intrinsic goals that connect to your deeper “why.” Goals that feel purposeful and exciting keep you motivated every step of the way — and they wire stronger in your brain, leading to lasting change.
4️⃣ Cut: Negative or Unsupportive Self-Talk — watch for phrases like “It’ll be too hard,” “I’m just lazy,” or “There’s no point.” These narratives block progress and keep you stuck.
Instead: Shift your focus to solutions and build support systems that encourage and guide you toward your goals. Replace self-criticism with curiosity and ask, “What’s one small step I can take in the direction I want to go?”
5️⃣ Cut: Going it alone — convincing yourself that this year you’ll power through the highs and lows without support (even though it hasn’t worked before).
Instead: Build a support system. Whether it’s a community, accountability partner, or coach, having people to inspire and guide you makes all the difference. In fact, research shows accountability increases your chances of success by 95%!
