💭 ☀️ 😎 MEDITATIVE MUSING: SELF-WORTH SECRETS: MAKING UNCERTAINTY YOUR B*TCH 🤭
Hello my looooooves!
And welcome to Topic #03 in our Self-Worth Series.
If you’ve been following along, you’ve already learned about:
Unlocking Genuine Self-Worth
Practices to Super-Charge Self-Worth
Now that you’ve been properly prepped, I’m excited to dive into what I believe is the #1 test of how grounded you are in your self-worth (regardless of external circumstances).
That big test arises when we’re faced with uncertainty.
The reason uncertainty is such a test to our genuine self-worth is because, as humans, our minds are incredibly habitual.
(Just to paint a picture of how habitual — according to the National Science Foundation, 95% of our thoughts are repetitive and of those, 80% are negative. And according to studies in neuroscience, between 40% and 50% of daily actions are habitual.)
Meaning, it’s easy to feel worthy when you feel in-the-know, in control, and as if you have the cheat codes for whatever’s coming next—but when we come face-to-face with an experience, pause, or predicament that has us say, “The old way isn’t working—but IDK what’s next….”
— That’s when we get to see where our self-worth truly lies.
I once heard uncertainty, or the space between points A and B, described as a “hallway” moment—where you’ve walked (or been forced) out of Door A, but are unsure of which Door you want to walk into next.
This space can range from a massive life-shift to a seasonal change and can look like:
Having a “slow” period at work.
Getting laid off from a job.
Breaking up or getting broken up with.
Getting ghosted by someone or having a relationship end unexpectedly.
A close friend you spend all your time with moving away.
Moving to a new place where you need to rebuild connections and hobbies.
Setting boundaries around activities, people, or experiences that don’t serve you—without yet knowing how that space will be filled next.
Being in a transition or healing period where you're done with the past but not yet grounded in your future.
Because our mind ties our self-concept, identity, behaviors, and emotions to the things we most habitually do, in the face of uncertainty, we can start to feel seriously uncomfortable.
When we encounter that space, in whatever form it appears to us, that’s when our subconscious fear-based beliefs and patterns have the opportunity to rise to the surface.
And without those external circumstance to validate or provide us with a sense of worth, our genuine connection to self-worth becomes clear.
In this space, we may notice our mind has attached our “worth” to:
Feeling productive or having endless to-do’s.
Pleasing someone or getting their validation.
Our routine schedule filled with habitual people and activities that make us feel “in-the-know”.
“Getting results” or achieving our goals.
“Being certain,” “feeling smart,” or “being in control”.
And without those external factors, the thoughts and emotions that may come up can sound like:
“I’m not enough.”
“I can’t trust myself.”
“I’m a failure.”
“I’m a disappointment.”
“I did something wrong.”
“I’m not safe.”
As a meditation and mindset coach, I can tell you with my full chest—none of those unsupportive thoughts are absolutely true or valid.
I can also tell you that what keeps us from comfortably experiencing that “hallway” space and making choices that feels fully right and aligned for us is the power/validity we give those subconscious fear-based beliefs as well as our discomfort in sitting with them.
That discomfort will have us quickly jumping into something familiar and spending the next weeks, months, maybe even years, committing our (very valuable) time to it—even if it’s not right for us — rather than seeing that space as a blank canvas of opportunity waiting to be shaped by our authentic desires and present-moment solutions to getting us there.
And trust me, I totally get it. The fear and compulsion to jump in feels oh so very real. (Which is why we meditate to regulate our system and align our mind to possibilities in the midst of that.)
I may be a meditation coach now, but I’m also a human being with a background of absolutely being head-over-heels in love with certainty and control.
So before we close out, I’ll share a quote with you that’s helped me break up with certainty and create a beautiful, more loving relationship with uncertainty:
“Uncertainty is the fertile ground of pure creativity and freedom. Uncertainty means stepping into the unknown in every moment of our existence. The unknown is the field of all possibilities, ever fresh, ever new, always open to the creation of new manifestations. Without uncertainty and the unknown, life is just the stale repetition of outworn memories. You become the victim of the past, and your tormentor today is your self leftover from yesterday.” - by my fav, Deepak Chopra
Along with a reminder that: life gets boring when you know (or try to control) how everything plays out. Imagine a lifetime of re-reading the same book, hoping that you’ll be surprised and delighted by something new at the ending.
Certainty’s like that. Uncertainty powered by genuine self-worth (again, regardless of and without attachment to external circumstances) makes our life like the most interesting novel we’ve ever read—with new characters, surprises, and even awe-inspiring experiences beyond what our mind could have ever imagined—in every chapter.
So if you’re a glutton for control like I was, I hope this helps bring a new perspective to the beauty of uncertainty. And if you want practices to help, you already know to check them out below!
✏️ WAYS TO PRACTICE: Leaning into Uncertainty
1 / Daily Single-Pointed Meditation Practice
Like I mentioned above, the one sticky thing about fully leaning into uncertainty is that our past is putting up a fight to have a hold on us and our choices.
(This is happening always, in more invisible ways - even when we’re not faced with uncertainty. Which is why meditations purpose of keeping us present is massively more impactful than what we normally realize.)
If you’re faced with uncertainty, find an app like Open or Insight Timer, and use meditations to deeply connect you to the present moment. (Typically titled “Focus” or “Presence”).
Instead of trying to use this time to “think about nothing”, instead - become aware of the fact that in this present moment, as you meditate - you are safe, there’s nothing you need to do or be except focus your mind into the present.
Neutrally observe what pulls you out - these are the subconscious patterns of your past we’re talking about. And then once you’ve observed, direct your mind back to presence.
Sometimes I like to picture my breath reaching out like a hand on the exhale and touching the moment in front of me - anchoring my attention into this moment here, and now. (Which is the only moment we ever really got!)
Maybe it’s a visual that’ll help you too. 💨
2 / Shifting Fear ➡️ Excitement
Fun fact, fear and excitement elicit nearly the same response from our nervous system.
(Increased heart-rate, rush of adrenaline, sometimes sweaty palms.)
The only difference between the two (when not in an actually life-threatening predicament) is the meaning our mind is making of the present moment and the future.
When we’re in fear, we’re thinking of everything that can go wrong. When we’re in excitement, we’re thinking of everything that can go right.
When you notice that adrenaline pumping in the face of uncertainty, pivot the meaning your mind is making into everything that can go right.
You can do this mentally or via journaling - and can start it as: “What if……..[positive outcome]”.
3 / Magic Blank Canvas Journal Prompt:
One of my favorite things to do when faced with uncertainty or unexpected space is to imagine it like a blank canvas I get the opportunity to paint my desires onto.
I want you to do the same, taking out a blank journal page and imagine you’re writing out the story of your next month onto it.
You can include:
How you want to experience this time
What you want to create / do with it
What would really bring you joy + fun if it happened
And I don’t want you to worry about the “result” or whether it’s realistic for now. I just want you to tap into the energy behind what you’re writing down and take that with you.
For the more applicable things, that you can realistically impact - take the steps to do that. For the more ✨ magical ✨ things, just live life as if they’ve already happened.
Because remember: it’s that energy that connects you to that genuine self-worth & all the fun, aligned surprises that come from living through it.
