DIVING INTO: THE PRODUCTIVITY OF DOING NOTHING
God doesn’t just the sound of doing absolutely nothing at all just sound sooooo good.
Well, there’s something that I want to yell at the top of my lungs to all my highly-ambitious who are “pushing” themselves through cycles of burnout and stress to build their dream life:
The pause (i.e. taking breaks, letting yourself disconnect, slowing down, resting, relaxing, saying “no” to more work on an already endless to-do list, quiet periods, etc.) isn’t the problem, the pause is a total power move.
We’ve been conditioned to believe we need to be "on it" all the time — always producing, always building, always pushing forward.
So when life slows down — whether by choice or by force — the mind panics:
Am I falling behind?
Why can’t I keep up like I used to?
Is something wrong with me?
(Trust me, I GET it!)
Slowing down doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong. It doesn’t mean you’ve lost your edge or that everything will collapse because you’ve taken a break.
It means your nervous system is doing what it’s designed to do — protect you.
In fact, studies by Harvard Health show that chronic stress keeps the nervous system stuck in a sympathetic “fight or flight” state — which directly impacts focus, decision-making, and even immune function. Without intentional rest, we stay reactive rather than responsive.
So that “lull” you feel that you’re in – that’s not you slipping.
That’s your system asking (tbh, probably begging) to reset.
When things quiet down, it’s not a setback — it’s an invitation:
→ To get honest about what you actually need
→ To hear yourself again
→ To reconnect with what energizes you, rather than drains you
Taking time to slow down isn’t weakness. It’s self-respect.
It’s what allows you to make intentional moves, not just reactive ones.
We’re not meant to operate in overdrive all the time. Even machines break down when they’re pushed too hard — so why do we expect ourselves to keep going without pause?
What meditation continues to teach me — and what I see again and again with clients — is that the most productive thing you can do isn’t to push harder.
It’s to pause with intention – to stop performing and start listening.
Because when you give yourself space, your next step becomes obvious.
And it’s not coming from fear, pressure, or urgency – it’s coming from alignment.
So what if this week, you didn’t need to justify the stillness?
What if you knew without a shadow of a doubt slowing down was the most productive thing you could do?
✏️ WAYS TO PRACTICE: DOING NOTHING (WITHOUT FREAKING OUT!)
Here’s Your Challenge for The Week:
🕯️ Block 30 minutes this week to do absolutely nothing.
No input. No pressure. No outcome. Just you — being. Breathing. Looking out the window. Walking slowly. Letting your nervous system reset instead of perform.
If you feel anxious or guilty — that’s the exact conditioning we’re rewiring.
Don’t jump to do something in the stillness. Don’t listen to the voice saying “this is stupid, I have so much to do”. Just notice what comes up and let it pass.
Through this you’re teaching your nervous system that rest is safe and that your worth isn’t measured by your output.
(If it helps, remind yourself that neuroscience backs this too — even short periods of “waking rest” — like lying down with no stimulation or walking slowly without input —help the brain consolidate information, recharge executive function, and increase clarity.) 😉
📓 Journal Prompt
“What have I been denying what my body’s been asking me for?”
“Where can I embrace slowness as strength?”
🎧 Affirmation:
“I trust the rhythm of my life. I don’t have to earn rest. Slowness is a strategy, not a setback.”
